5 Facts About Y Station You Didn’t Know

While you may be familiar with many of the faces that make up our tenacious team, we’re taking the opportunity to celebrate our 3rd birthday by introducing you to five facts about Y Station that you may not know.

1.Our unofficial team anthem is “Nothing Compares 2 U” by Sinéad O'Connor.

Each Monday, a member of the team is nominated to create a playlist curated with songs surrounding a specific theme to keep the rest of us energized as we tackle the week ahead.

You can learn a lot about a person by listening to their go-to tunes, but what we didn’t expect to learn was how often this classic by Sinéad O'Connor would show up on our playlists. You can’t fight fate and so, we embraced our shared fondness for the Prince cover and made it our unofficial (if not a bit solemn) anthem.

2. Our office is home to a collection of noteworthy local artwork.

On the walls of our office hang several prints and hand-picked pieces that are close to our hearts, but this set by Raymond Biesinger serves as a tribute to the locally born artist whose work you may have seen featured in magazines, the cover of books, and in ads for major international brands.

3. “Bravocado” is our certified GIF for celebrating team achievements.

Whether someone kicked ass in a new business pitch or put in long hours to execute a complex project, nothing feels more like a hearty pat on the back like the joyous “Bravocado”.

4. There is a secret rooftop entrance to our office.

Our office can be found in Unit 601 of the historic Alberta Block building in downtown Edmonton but as you’ll quickly learn, the elevator only goes up to the 5th floor.

The journey to our office will take you across a rooftop walkway where you’ll get can’t-beat views of Jasper Avenue and access to the mysterious 6th floor office space.

5. And it also happens to be haunted.

It’s a good thing that much of our team has a penchant for the paranormal because the Alberta Block building is infamously home to the disgruntled spirit of Sam the Caretaker.

Sam was a supposed pipe-smoking, opera-loving caretaker at the building in the 1950s, and died of a heart attack in the basement in a dark corner, his favourite napping spot. You can learn more about our ghostly officemate here.

It has been a wild three years. We started this company less than 60 days before the first COVID-19 lockdown sent everyone home and made seemingly everything uncertain. We know that being free to do things like pick out art for the office, share playlists with our growing team, or enjoy gif-based inside jokes on our office chat is an immense privilege. That’s not lost on us. And we owe it to the people that work with us – our unstoppable team, the incredible agencies and consultants we get to partner with, and of course, the clients that trust us with their most important decisions, directions and ambitions.

From the whole Y Station team, thank you for everything, we’ll see you out there.
